The Committee

Meet the organisers

Current Chairperson
Douglas Petrie
In his capacity as Chairman, Doug has many important roles to carry out before, during and after Sports day in order to put some gloss on the occasion. Doug brushes shoulders with the celebrity openers every year as he hosts the traditional ‘Chairman’s lunch’ prior to the official opening. Doug hides his emulsions well and is known for delivering an entertaining welcome speech to ensure everyone starts off Oldmeldrum Sports day in the white spirits (groan…)

Aside from his committee duties, Doug runs his own painting and decorator business in Oldmeldrum.

Secretary
Gordon Forsyth
When not carrying out his secretarial committee duties, Gordon can often be seen beating the streets of Aberdeenshire villages and towns in his role as a local constabulary sergeant (aye, he’s a Bobby). Gordon and his wife Emma live in nearby Inverurie with their two young children. Gordon took over as secretary from his Father (and current ‘Honorary President’), Bob Forsyth in 2005. If you need to know anything about Oldmeldrum Sports and Highland games, just ask Gordon!
Treasurer
Stan McKenzie
As a retired banker (spellcheck), Stan is ideally suited to his role as treasurer for the committee and also carries out a similar role on behalf of Oldmeldrum Golf Club. On the golf course, Stan is often compared to the famous Spanish golfer Miguel-Angel Jiminez, however unfortunately for Stan this is more due to similarities in his posture and appearance rather than the quality of his play. Stan is married to Linda and they have two grown up children.
Committee Member since 2000
Grant Davidson
As the local business owner and car salesman at Meldrum Motors, Grant can be relied upon to provide you with a shiny new set of wheels and keep your car running smoothly on the road. Grant is one of the longer serving members on the current committee and is responsible for managing a small team of local volunteers to run the sponsors hospitality area on the day. According to his wife Caroline, Grant is a keen (but not very good) golfer and his favourite hole is the 19th.
Committee Member since 2004
Neil Webster
Neil is a prominent North East farmer who’s more often seen on the golf course or in the hospitality suites at Old Trafford or Pittodrie football stadiums than he is on the back of a combine harvester. Neil also enjoys shooting and fishing in his spare time and he kindly provides his farm machinery in the week running up to Sports weekend to help with all the set up requirements. Neil carries out the role of Ring master on the day to make sure everything runs like clockwork in the main arena.

The Webster family also own and manage Lochter Activity Centre on the outskirts of Oldmeldrum.

Committee members since 2007
Denise Forsyth
As the only female member of the main committee, Denise has her work cut out to keep the male committee members in check……..but she does it well!

Denise’s role at Aberdeenshire Council ensures she has all the right attributes to enable her to support her brother Gordon with a portion of the various secretarial and organisational duties. As an ex Young Farmer, Denise is ‘weel aquant’ with the Doric tongue and isn’t frightened to muck in and get her hands dirty with some of the more physical work on Sports day.

Committee Member since 2007
Chris Davidson
Chris is by far the most handsome and intelligent member of the organising committee and without doubt the finest golfer in the group (who wrote these blogs!?)

Chris and his wife, Julie live on the outskirts of Oldmeldrum with their 2 teenage children and small menagerie of pets including 3 ponies, 3 dogs, 2 sheep and a cat (no goldfish!).

Chris works as an engineer in the oil and gas industry and is a football coach for one of the Colony Park football teams which his son plays in.

On sports day, Chris is responsible for managing the trade stand area and for driving the celebrity opener into the main arena in the famous 1949 Black Austin Hire Car that was previously owned by his late father, Jim.

Committee Member since 2008
Kenny Grant
Kenny is a keen cyclist, an ex-serving military soldier and a retained fire fighter at the Oldmeldrum branch of Grampian Fire Brigade. Kenny is known locally as ‘Digger’ (due to his Father’s plant and excavation business, not his ability to ‘tak a bucket’) and in his full time role working at the Oldmeldrum distillery, he ensures that the local Glen Garioch whiskeys are of the highest quality and amongst the finest tasting in Scotland. Why not sample some yourself from the marquee bar on Sports day or even pay the distillery a visit for your very own guided tour!
Committee Member since 2009
James Hay
As a staunch Manchester United supporter and season ticket holder at Old Trafford for several years, James spends many a weekend on the road travelling with family and friends to watch his Red Devil heroes in action. James is a time-served plumber to trade and also goes by the names of Jim, Jimmer or for those who have known him long enough, “Hay-Ho”.

James’s wife Julia has been overheard to call him many other interesting names, however most of these could not be printed here as they failed the censorship test.

Committee Member since 2012
Sandy Duguid
Sandy manages his own seed merchant business, which he took over following the sad loss of his father and prominent ex committee Chairman Murray Duguid. In his spare time Sandy enjoys fishing, shooting and ‘occasionally’ socialising. Sandy, his wife Karen and their family face exciting times ahead as they are about to embark on a new house build over the coming months. On Sports day, Sandy can be easily located in or around the hospitality areas wearing his kilt, as he undertakes the all-important role of ‘Sponsors relations officer’ on behalf of the committee.
Committee Member since 2008
Keith Walker

At the imposing Height of 6’6″ Keith is the tallest member of the organising committee, even outstretching the towering secretary. Keith and his 2 children are all season ticket holders and avid followers of Aberdeen FC and attend many of the away games too. Keith is a long term member of Oldmeldrum Golf Club and enjoys the game of golf despite often standing too close to the ball after he has hit it.
Keith is also responsible for maintaining the Oldmeldrum Sports website.
